The Center for Strategic Urban Community Leadership at Rutgers–Camden honored the service and contributions of Latino men and women at Rutgers during a special ceremony on October 2nd.  Over 60 Latino leaders from Camden and Rutgers University attended the recognition luncheon, which was organized as part of National Hispanic Month.

CSUCL Director Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago said was an important moment to recognize the dedicated work of Latinos at the university and nationwide.

“Since the founding of our country, Latinos have not only been an important part of our society, but they have helped ours become the most vibrant, most prosperous and strongest nation on Earth,” said Dr. Santiago, who is also a Distinguished Service Professor of Public Administration at Rutgers–Camden.

At this event, we celebrate National Hispanic Month in honor of the rich history and culture of Latinos in the United States and the contributions and achievements that have helped make this nation, and this university, what it is today,” she said.

At the ceremony, the CSUCL honored the “Latino Pioneers of Rutgers–Camden”: four men and women at the university whose service over many years earned them the respect of their colleagues, but until now had gone largely unrecognized.

  • Pedro Berrios, a lieutenant for the Rutgers University Police at Camden;
  • Marixsa Fryar, a custodian with the Rutgers–Camden custodial services;
  • Maria Garcia, business manager for the Camden Faculty of Arts & Sciences;
  • Iris Rodriguez, an assistant to the Dean of the Camden Faculty of Arts & Sciences.

Dr. Santiago, who is a member of Rutgers University President Richard L. McCormick’s Diversity Council, said there were plans to establish this luncheon as an annual event at Rutgers–Camden.  “I know there are two things that can bring Latinos together: good food and great music,” Dr. Santiago said.  “It’s important that we work together as a group and continue to increase opportunities for Latinos on this campus.”
