LEAP Academy Students during Health FairThe Rutgers/LEAP Family Support Center is educating LEAP Academy students on the importance of health in recognition of Children’s Health Week.

From October 5-9, the Center hosted a series of educational sessions at LEAP Elementary and LEAP High School that focused on hygiene and dental health for elementary and middle school students.  LEAP juniors and seniors even received a session on CPR-training.

“This is a very important skill that these seniors can take with them to college, or their home,” said the Family Support Center’s Margarita David, who is also the LEAP High School Nurse.

Nurse David instructed the high school students on the process of CPR using demonstration dummies, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, chest compressions, and how to apply pads for an AED (automated-external-defibrillator).   Students were given DVDs to bring home and share with their families.

She said the skills learned today might help a student save a friend, college roommate, or loved one.  “The great part is that these students may be able to teach others what they learned, and help others save lives,” added Nurse David, who is also works as an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse at a local hospital on weekends.

Throughout the week, Nurse David also visited elementary classrooms from grades 4-6 and discussed how washing your hands can prevent you from getting the flu and spoke to them about dental hygiene.  Grades 7-9 had the opportunity to learn about how exercise and healthy eating can give you more energy and even improve your academics.

Children’s Health Week is just one of several initiatives from the Family Support Center this semester.  On October 17th, the FSC is sponsoring the LEAP Health Fair at the elementary school playground that will offer free blood pressure screenings and nutrition help for the LEAP community.  The FSC also has plans next semester for a Health Awareness Week and a “LEAP Across the Bridge” walk for parents and students to raise awareness about nutrition and health.
