The HOP Clinic is a special partnership between Rutgers, LEAP Academy, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Cooper Family Medicine to provide free primary healthcare for adults, children, and families in Camden City who lack health insurance. 

The HOP Clinic’s most unique feature is that it is a student-run clinic.  Third-year medical students at RWJMS staff the clinic as part of their residency programs.  The Clinic is supervised by the Health Center’s Chief Physician Dr. Dyanne Westerberg, a Medical Chief with Cooper Family Medicine, and attending physicians from RWJMS who volunteer. 

The Clinic holds weekly office hours and is run out of the Rutgers/LEAP Health Center at LEAP Academy Elementary School.  Divided into three practices (Adult, Pediatric, and Women’s clinics), patients receive one-on-one care from student doctors who stay with patients for the entire year, even accompanying them on outside referrals. 

The Adult clinic offers patients treatment on a number of illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol; the Women’s clinic conducts gynecological exams and breast cancer screenings; and the Pediatric clinic conducts regular health checks on children from infancy through adolescence.  In addition, the HOP Clinic assists patients in the frequently daunting task of navigating the healthcare system while also providing student doctors with the invaluable firsthand medical experience they will need as future physicians.
