A critical component at the core of the CSUCL’s mission is its commitment to the concept of “Engaged Scholarship.”  Through partnerships with a number of academic departments at Rutgers, the Career Center, the Office of Financial Aid, and other students support units on campus, the CSUCL has been able to create internships and service placements that expose college students to applied-learning experiences and enhance their education. 

Last year alone, the CSUCL placed 100 college students in fellowships, internships, and work-study and student-teaching opportunities at LEAP Academy University Charter School.  Students in departments like Childhood Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Teacher Preparation, Pre-Medicine, and Urban Studies were placed in programs like Jumpstart early childhood literacy, HOP outreach medical clinic for the uninsured, and our Centers of Excellence. 

By putting college students in contact with children and families, the CSUCL’s Engaged Scholarship placements are:

• Creating vital field experiences for young professionals at Rutgers and other local schools that complements their academic work in the classroom;
• Ensuring high quality services for the LEAP community through the skills and enthusiasm our interns bring to the school;
• Developing and nurturing collaborative efforts that bring Rutgers–Camden closer to its surrounding community in ways that are meaningful and mutually beneficial.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

All Rutgers students who are interested in a service-learning placement at the CSUCL are encouraged to contact us for more information.  Placements can be arranged for academic credit, student teaching requirements, work-study wages through the Rutgers Career Center or Office of Financial Aid, or simply as a volunteer opportunity.
